Erik is the Director of Business Operations at Breakaway Academy.
Erik attended the University of Minnesota and played hockey for the Golden Gophers. He was a two-time captain for the gophers and is currently on the top 15 all-time scoring list at the U. During his time playing college hockey, Erik was drafted in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. After completing college, Erik signed with the Coyotes and started his career with their minor league team in Springfield, MA.
Westrum made his NHL debut during the 2003-2004 season. After finishing the season with the Coyotes, Erik went on to play an important role in helping Team USA win a bronze medal for the Men’s National Team. Westrum scored the game-winning goal in a shootout to secure the bronze medal against Slovakia and his future teammate Marian Gaborik of the Minnesota Wild.
In the 2005-2006 season, Erik signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild sending him back to his home state. He finished the season with the Wild’s farm team, the Houston Aeros leading the AHL in scoring. At the end of the 2006 season, Erik signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After six professional seasons in North America, Westrum signed a European contract in the Swiss League with the HC Ambri-Pitta. Westrum led the league in scoring his first season in Switzerland and signed a 4-year extension to finish his playing career with Ambri-Piotta. After an 11-year professional hockey career, Erik returned home to Minnesota to pursue his MBA at the Carlson School of Management. He was the owner and president of numerous businesses before joining Breakaway Academy as the Director of Business and Operations.
Erik currently resides in Prior Lake, MN, and is married to Kelly. They now have four beautiful children together; Luke, Ethan, Isabella, and Evelina. Erik enjoys coaching youth sports, spending time with family, and playing sports.
