John was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota, where he played youth and high school hockey. After graduating high school, John spent the next two seasons playing for the Wisconsin Dells Ducks in the MNJHL. In his final season for the Ducks, he was awarded Goalie of the Year. Following his junior career, John attended Hamline University located in St. Paul, Minnesota where he spent the next four seasons playing NCAA DIII hockey for the Pipers. In his freshman season, John was named to the MIAC All-Rookie Team. In his sophomore season, the Pipers won the MIAC championship and made it to the NCAA DIII National Tournament. John graduated from Hamline in 2017 with a Business Management Degree.
John went on to play five years of professional hockey after graduating from Hamline University. John played four seasons in Sweden for two different clubs, Åmåls SK and Glimma HK. The other season was spent playing for the Mentor Icebreakers located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Once John’s playing career wrapped up in the spring of 2022, he decided to pursue a career in coaching. For the 2022-23 season, John joined the Des Moines Buccaneers AAA program as their full-time goalie coach where he worked with the 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U teams. John now joins Breakaway Academy for the 2023-24 season where he will be one of two full-time the goalie instructors.
